WordCamp PhilippinesThe spearheading of the organization of WordCamp Philippines 2008, in both Manila and Davao, is in the hands of Mindanaoans (among them, an adoptive Dabawenyo). This is the same group of intrepid bloggers who made our MindanaoBloggers.com community possible.

When we were organizing MBS1, I was asked by Matt Mullenweg when we spoke over Skype about the acceptance or usage of WordPress in Davao. I had to be honest and told him that the Philippine South is Blogger.com country. But I promised the founder of Automattic.com that I would give time and effort in increasing the number of WordPress users in Davao and Mindanao.

Towards fulfilling this promise, my group — Andrew, MiGs™, Ria & Winstonand I have been doing blogging seminars centered on WordPress, developing Web sites on WordPress, and encouraging other bloggers to use this awesome content management system.

We were also doing blogging events, such as the Davao Food Trips, the culmination of which was the Davao Food Appreciation Tour last March, and meet-ups with business groups such as the Davao Association of Tour Operators. Not to mention the bloggers’ parties.

And so it was only a natural turn of events that I broached the idea of doing the country’s first WordCamp to the group. This was right after MBS1, but firmed up only when all of us went to Quezon City to attend iBlog4 last April.

The main event of WordCamp Philippines 2008 will be held in Manila on 6 September 2008, at the College of St. Benilde. The Davao leg will be a couple of days earlier, at Bryan’s Grill & Café, 91 Narra St., Palm Village (at the back of Victoria Plaza, via Veloso St.). I look forward to the successful conduct of the first WordCamp in Southeast Asia. With my team, and our Manila-based collaborators — Juned, Dave, Paul and Chuckie — it will surely be a great event!

Our gratitude goes out to this international event’s generous sponsors:
